A famous judge once said that everyone should pay the taxes they owe
– but no more!
I had the pleasure to serve as a State Tax Judge in the Strayhorn
Comptroller of Public Accounts administration. In that capacity I
observed taxpayers who –
· Overpaid taxes
· Failed to maintain proper records
· Unnecessarily offended tax auditors
· Failed to take full advantage of tax exceptions and exemptions
· Filed late tax returns
· Choose the wrong corporate entity for tax purposes
· Poorly advocated their defenses
Texas, which as a stand alone country would be the 10th largest
economy in the world, has a unique tax system. Like every tax system,
it is complex and full of “mine fields.” However, it can be successfully
managed and, when appropriately managed, overall, businesses and
individuals will find their taxes lower in Texas than in most states.
I offer Texas taxpayers the following:
Tax planning to legally minimize tax liability;
Advice on business entity selection (e.g., limited partnerships) to legally
minimize tax liability;
Assistance in obtaining necessary federal and state tax identification
numbers and implementing appropriate tax recordkeeping procedures;
Assistance with timely filing of tax returns with both the State Comptroller
and the Internal Revenue Service;
And, of course, dispute resolution, including informal conferences with
auditors, formal dispute resolution conferences, and administrative trials
and civil appeals.
A recent case involved a contested sales tax refund application over the
taxability of certain equipment installed as part of an upgrade to a
concrete manufacturing company.
Pay what you owe – but no more!
